English Learners: Introduction to the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 20
WIDA stands for World- Class Instructional Design and Assessment. The WIDA consortium is a group of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English learners and is housed at the Wisconsin Center for Education Reserarch at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.The WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition, defines the language multilingual learners need as they engage in disciplinary learning. The framework serves as a resource for planning and implementing language curriculum, instruction, and assessment for multilingual learners. The framework is a tool for educators to use in the implementation of evidence-based strategies when meeting the linguistic and academic needs of EL students. Educators can use the framework to promote and guide systematic, explicit, and sustained language development; support and frame collaboration among educators to plan for content and language integration in culturally and linguistically sustaining ways; monitor multilingual learners' language growth; and provide standards-referenced feedback to students and families. This session is an introduction to the framework for educators looking to implement the LDS framework into their instructional practice.
